August 20-26, 2018

We attended their flag ceremony in the morning at 7am. I really like their national anthem. While the ceremony is still going on, I am observing the students. My mentor Pak Eka has a class observation by his supervisor. So, I took the chance to observe how my mentor handle the class. He is a good teacher, he can control his students and he prepared a lot of activities and the students are participative too. I learned from Pak Eka the new techniques on how to handle the class especially the students have different personalities and perspective and most important is to how to catch the attention of the class while you are having your discussion.

He shared to me that he is practicing “student-centered approach” because that is one of their curriculum. His topic is all about basketball and he starts first with a game and after that discussion and next is activity again. He let his students discover the proper execution of the basic skills in basketball. After that, he let his students play and gave a feedback which he corrected his student’s performance.

On the afternoon, he gave me the opportunity to take charge of his remaining class in Grade 7-D and I go back to my dormitory first to get my laptop and recalling our topic in basketball so that I can have my idea on what are the possible activities I can give to my students. So my class started at 13:15pm and I introduce myself first and after that, I let them introduce themselves too. After I discuss the brief history of Basketball we go immediately to the gym to continue my class. And my focus is on the basic skills in basketball like passing, shooting and dribbling. My students are so hyper and they are interested on the topic. So I let them play but the boys and girls are separated. I gave them the freedom to play. After that, I gave them a feedback and gave them a little correction in terms of how they perform the basic skills in basketball. I ended the class at 15:00pm and I am so happy because it was my unexpected class but I still survived!

It was my second time in teaching my assigned class in Grade 9. I prepared one lesson plan to my 5 classes. But today, I have 2 classes only due to their preparation of Eid al-Adha. My first class is still in Grade 9-E from 7:00am to 9:20am and my second class is in grade 9-D 9:20am to 11:40am. My topic is all about the Philippine Folk Dance and the fundamental positions. I can see the diversity of the students, on how they performed my activities and on how they participated on my discussion inside the classroom. They are still energetic and interested because it was their first time to encounter dances coming from the Philippines. I prepared a lot of sample videos in Philippine Folk Dance so that they can have the idea on how to perform those dances. After my discussion, we proceed to the gym and its dance time!!

I have to guide my students here because I observe that they are confused with the steps. I have to exert extra effort to put attention to every one of them so that they will notice that I observe them and they will do what I instructed to them. So, I divided the class into 3 groups. I gave them time to practice and the team caption will lead his/her members. After they performed, I gathered them to give my comments about their presentation. First, I gave my positive feedback and next is some things that they will improve soon.

It’s Eid al-Adha Day. We don’t have class today but we still went to school to witness how they celebrated that occasion. At night, we observed that a lot of cows and goats in the streets and even outside in our dormitory. One of my friend got pity in the cow and didn’t sleep well because of the sound of the cow all night. Upon arriving in the Lab School, they are all in the covered court and they are having their praying. We witnessed how the cow and goats died but that is their tradition and the good thing is all the meats are going to give in the poor people. The officers helped the teachers to pack the meat so that they can immediately go to the places where they can find those people who is in need. I am amazed and I gave my respect for their tradition.
